QHow long has Pastors to Prisoners been in existence and where do you work?AWe first filed for non-profit status in November 1995, obtained IRS approval as of February 1996. At present, we have Yard Pastors assigned at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, and Centinela Prison in the Imperial Valley.QWhat's a Yard Pastor?ACalifornia Correctional Facilities house an average 4500 inmates per prison, divided among 4-5 separate sections called "yards." Sheer numbers and the distance between Yard Chapels limit the effectiveness of the one paid protestant chaplain assigned to each prison. A volunteer Yard Pastor has special clearance from the prison administration to work principally on one yard (about 1000 men), to assist the Chaplain by escorting volunteer groups, supervising prayer meetings, Bible studies, and Christian videos. He is among the men on a daily basis and earns their trust, providing a role model for new believers and encouragement for daily living. He is also available for family death notifications, individual counseling, baptisms, and other pastoral functions. He organizes and oversees the Chapel Inmate Advisory Committee, which trains inmates to fulfill various roles in the "Church on the Rock."Email us with your question. If it is a question we feel many might ask, we'll put your question and answer on this page.
